Cyber Essentials for tenders and supply chains: how to read the requirement
Cyber Essentials increasingly appears in procurement and supply-chain requirements, but the wording matters. A tender that names Cyber Essentials Plus should be treated differently from one asking for standard Cyber Essentials or simply for evidence of cyber controls.
Extract four facts from the tender
- Which certification level is named?
- Must the certificate exist at bid submission, contract award or service commencement?
- Which legal entity and systems must be covered?
- Does the buyer require annual renewal during the contract?
When the wording is unclear
Ask the procurement contact to clarify the exact certification requirement in writing. Do not rely on a provider’s sales page to interpret your customer’s contract.
